Cabrera, Dominican Republic

Cabrera is an exceptionally beautiful and unique rural community located in the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez on the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic. Located close to the much larger town of Nagua, Cabrera is often called "Cabrera de Nagua" to distinguish it from other towns named Cabrera in the Dominican Republic. Our Cabrera boasts several of the most gorgeous beaches on the island in the near vicinity and is today a rapidly growing town of about 39,000 covering approximately 276 km2. Unlike its counterparts on the north coast, Cabrera is not dependent upon tourism, obtaining most of its income from cattle and agricultural products.

The city and surrounding areas are considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic. Cabrera faces primarily east, on the Atlantic Ocean, enjoying an almost constant soothing breeze from the east-west tradewinds. It offers exceptionally lush vegetation, beaches, fresh water pools and rivers, waterfalls, and many more natural attractions.

In addition to the natural beauties of the area, Cabrera also has one of the most progressive local governments. The local and foreign communities work harmoniously to improve education, reduce crime and improve the overall living conditions for the area. Jorge Cavoli, the highly educated mayor of Cabrera, is largely credited with this unique and powerful synergy of cultures.

A reflection of the success of Cavoli’s approach is seen in the many exceptional vacation homes and luxury vacation villas being developed in the area. Some of the most famous and highly desirable luxury villas are located in Orchid Bay Estates, an American-designed gated community just outside of Cabrera. The massive Villa Anacaona, over 55,000 square feet, is located in Orchid Bay Estates and is possibly the largest private villa on the entire island (if not even the entire Caribbean).

The rental villas of Villa Castellamonte, Sunrise Villa, Villa Lazy Heart, Flor de Cabrera, Golden Dolphin Villa, Villa Agualinda, Villa Flying Cloud, Villa Costa Norte and many others have made Cabrera into the “Hamptons of the Dominican Republic.” This success has even spread to the nearby town of Abreu, also under Cavoli’s leadership, where the new Seatree Estates boasts Villa Cantamar, another of the growing number of luxury vacation villas.  Most of these villas are managed by North Coast Management, the premier luxury property and rental management company headquartered in Cabrera.

Cabrera is located only 5km from the incredible Playa Grande Golf Course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. as his crowning achievement in the Caribbean, the Playa Grande Golf Course is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Coined the "Pebble Beach of the Caribbean," the Playa Grande Golf Course has 10 of its amazing 18 holes perched atop 100' high soaring sea cliffs.

And just at the foot of this challenging golf course is one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, according to Condé Nast travel magazine. Over a mile long, the deep white sand beach is framed by rugged sea cliffs and towering palm trees. With its big waves it is very popular for surfers and boogie board enthusiasts.

Although Playa Grande is likely the most well known beach in the area, any visitor here will also want to visit Playa Caleton, Playa Diamonte, Cabo Frances (also a National Park), Playa Entrada and the public beach at Orchid Bay. Each of these beaches, and others, offer unique characteristics and are all remarkably clear of the tourist crowds seen in other parts of the island.

Traveling to Cabrera is best achieved by flying into Puerto Plata (POP) and driving due east for 90km on the main highway. Cabrera is 130 km north of Santo Domingo (SDQ) and about 110km from Santiago (STI). Travelers from Canada and Europe can now fly into Samana International Airport (AZS), only 35 minutes from Cabrera.
